Dear HR Agony Aunt: Employee of the Month Has Had Its Day, Now What?
Is Employee of the Month still doing its job, or has it quietly run out of steam? This week’s reader wants to know whether to revamp it, bin it, or leave it alone, and our Agony Aunt has thoughts.
Headley v Northern Health and Social Care Trust [2026]

Q&A: What do employers in Northern Ireland need to know about the expansion of right to work checks from 1 October 2026?
Q&A: What do employers in Northern Ireland need to know about the expansion of right to work checks from 1 October 2026? Section 48 of the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act 2025 came into force on 1 October 2026. The changes apply in Northern Ireland and expand the UK's illegal working regime beyond traditional employment relationships. As a result, employers may need to carry out right to work checks in a wider range of working arrangements than before. Employers must carry out right to work checks to confirm that an individual is legally entitled to work in the UK and Northern Ireland. If a compliant check is completed before work starts, the employer will have a defence against any disputes that may later arise. Failure to carry out the required checks can result in penalties of up to £60,000 per worker and may also affect an organisation's ability to sponsor migrant workers in the future. Importantly, these obligations are no longer limited to individuals employed under contracts of employment. Right to work checks may also be required for individuals engaged under worker contracts, agency workers, certain individual subcontractors and individuals supplied through online matching services, such as gig economy workers. Employers should therefore review all of the ways in which labour is engaged and not assume that right to work checks only apply to employees.
