Legal Island Chairman Completes Ironman California in Support of Dementia NI and Alzheimer’s Ireland

Legal Island’s Chairman, Barry Phillips, has completed an extraordinary challenge to mark a milestone birthday — his 60th. To celebrate “60 rotations around the sun”, Barry took on the Ironman California in Sacramento, pushing himself through a 3.8km swim, a 180km cycle, and a full 42.2km marathon, all in one day.

Speaking about the decision, Barry joked:
“For the uninitiated, that’s a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike ride, and then, just for fun, a 42.2km run. All on the same day. I know… what was I thinking?”

But behind the humour sits a very personal motivation. Over his years at Legal Island, Barry has witnessed the impact of dementia on colleagues and their families — the weight of caring responsibilities and the emotional toll the disease brings.

“I’ve seen many colleagues quietly take on the huge responsibility of caring for loved ones with dementia,” he explained. “I’ve also seen the toll this cruel disease takes on families — and it sticks with you.”

Determined to do something meaningful to mark his 60th year, Barry chose to raise funds for two dementia charities working across the island of Ireland: Dementia NI and Alzheimer’s Ireland.

After more than 16 gruelling hours, Barry crossed the finish line in Sacramento.
“Never again,” he quipped afterwards. “When I hit 70 it’ll be a cruise instead for sure.”

Legal Island is incredibly proud of Barry’s achievement and the positive impact it will have for organisations supporting people living with dementia and their families.
