Background Following the appointment of another candidate to the position of Chair of Northern Ireland Water, the Fair Employment Tribunal upheld a claim by Dr Alan Lennon OBE that he had been the victim of unlawful discrimination on grounds of religious belief arising from the way in which the recruitment process had been conducted by the Minister at the time. The Tribunal held that Dr Lennon had not been discriminated against on grounds of his political opinion. The Tribunal believed that the Minister broke the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments for Northern Ireland.In March 2011, the Minister appointed a Catholic as chairman ahead of four shortlisted candidates, all of whom were Protestants. The Tribunal found that the successful candidate 45was appointed on grounds of his religion, of which the Minister was aware. It also stated its belief that the Minister had added new criteria to the selection process in order to secure the appointment of the successful candidate. http://bit.ly/LlxHpB
