Importance of Training

Did you know one in five people in the UK identify as neurodivergent?

Neurodiversity awareness training is essential for all staff, regardless of their role, as it influences every workplace interaction. According to CIPD’s Neuroinclusion at Work Report 2024, an estimated 1 in 5 people in the UK identify as neurodivergent. However, only half of employees surveyed said their organisation has an open and supportive climate where employees can talk about neurodiversity.

By embracing neurodiversity and providing the correct support, organisations can unlock the untapped potential of a diverse workforce, driving positive outcomes and enriching a workplace culture where differences are valued and supported. In their report CIPD explain:

The value of neurodiversity awareness training across an organisation should not be underestimated as it can help develop a general awareness, understanding and appreciation of colleagues.

Through suitable training, employees can become comfortable talking about neurodiversity. Establishing a basic etiquette will help put neurodivergent employees at ease, while also allowing management and colleagues to approach issues without fear of getting it wrong.

Understanding Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity can be seen as a weakness, but it offers hidden strengths in the workplace

Neurodiversity, or neurodivergence, refers to the natural variations in how human brains function and process information. Although the term neurodiversity technically includes both neurodivergent and neurotypical thinkers, it is commonly associated with certain conditions or neurodifferences such as autism spectrum disorder, dyspraxia, ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger’s, and others.

Raising awareness of neurodiversity allows organisations to fully harness the strengths of their diverse workforce, promoting understanding, reducing stigma, and ensuring equal opportunities for all employees. For example:

  • Autism can be a lack of eye contact; but it can also be noticing patterns nobody else has seen

  • ADHD can be chaotic; but it can also be hyperfocus and getting twice as much done as everybody else

  • Dyslexia can be spelling mistakes; but it can also be concepts, ideas, and a viewpoint you hadn’t previously considered

Who needs this training?

Who Can Benefit from Neurodiversity Awareness Training in Northern Ireland?

All-staff neurodiversity awareness training is important because every workplace interaction involves individuals with different cognitive and behavioural traits.  However, many organisations still underestimate the importance of neuroinclusion.

Every individual in your organisation can benefit from neurodiversity awareness training - by being aware of differences, you can create a more inclusive and diverse work environment that means all colleagues feel safe, respected, and valued.

Why is Neurodiversity Vital in the Workplace?

Neurodiversity in the workplace is important for a number of reasons. Not only does it create a more inclusive workplace, prevent discrimination in the recruitment process, and break down barriers, but having a neurodiverse workforce can actually lead to competitive advantages.

Neurodivergent people often see the world from unique perspectives, so they can often offer insight and solutions to problems that may go unnoticed by their neurotypical coworkers. By tapping into neurodiverse talent, you can bring numerous advantages to your organisation.

Everyone's brain functions and processes information differently – this is the case for both neurotypical and diagnosed neurodiverse people. Therefore, creating an inclusive environment for all employees can lead to a more open and understanding place of work.
