Safeguarding Children in Secondary Schools Protecting children and young people is one of the most important responsibilities of any school. Every member of staff, from teachers to volunteers, plays a crucial role in ensuring pupils’ safety and wellbeing. Legal Island’s Safeguarding Children in Northern Ireland Secondary Schools eLearning course equips all school personnel with the knowledge and confidence to play their part in protecting pupils and meeting statutory child protection obligations. The course is fully aligned with the Department of Education’s Safeguarding and Child Protection in Schools guidance, ensuring compliance with current Northern Irish law.
Overview

Child Protection is a shared responsibility across the whole school community. Recognising signs of abuse, understanding appropriate boundaries, and knowing how to report concerns are essential to safeguarding pupils effectively.

This course explores what constitutes abuse, how to recognise the indicators, and what immediate action to take when concerns arise. It also explores the duties of key personnel, such as the Designated Liaison Person, and outlines how schools must work with external agencies to protect children.

Through interactive, scenario-based learning, this course helps school staff understand their individual and collective responsibilities in maintaining a safe learning environment and supporting compliance with safeguarding law.
