Mark McAllister from the Labour Relations Agency will be opening and closing this year's Annual Reviews of Employment Law on 10 and 13 November, where he will set out a review of this year's changes and next year's intended variations in the employment law field. As a precursor to his comprehensive review paper, we asked him to set out many of the highlights he will be expanding upon at the conferences.

In the Eurovision song contest many years ago Johnny Logan sang, “What’s another year?” and although one is tempted to reply, “Fifty two weeks, now get lost!”, we practitioners in the field of employment law feel that a much more cultured riposte would be, “A significant period of legislative and case law based change, my dear John”. (Born Sean Patrick Michael Sherrard, apparently)
Indeed 2010 has been the year of technical amendments and pensive contemplation regarding landmark changes due to be ushered in during 2011. This year’s Annual Review of Employment Law from Legal-Island promises to be a bumper event catering for both specialists who wallow in minutiae and detail and for generalists who need an overall working knowledge of what is on the horizon.
Therefore to highlight a bumper event I have included a bumper email detailing what happened in 2010 and what is due to happen in 2011.
Whether you need to know about trade union ballot scrutineers or Industrial tribunal compensation rates, or perhaps fit notes and changes to maternity pay, or new flexible working provisions and changes to employment agency laws, all of these are addressed in the attached article.
If you are well versed in 2010 and are looking to the future there is enough to keep you busy with the new statutory changes pending on dispute resolution, the Agency Workers Regulations and the phasing out of the default retirement age.
2010 has been another big year and perhaps it will be the last “hold on to your hats” type of year for some time to come. Perhaps...
