Jason Elliott was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 2013 and is the Associate Head of School of Law at Ulster University.  As a practising barrister, he has developed a largely civil practice representing individuals, companies and public bodies in litigation. This covers a wide range of areas including personal injuries, wills and employment law. In terms of employment law, he has represented both applicants and respondents in the Industrial Tribunal.   At Ulster University, Jason lectures extensively on the civil areas of practise such as Equity and Trusts and delivers employment law lectures for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

This document provides a wide examination of the most interesting, impactful and sometimes bizarre cases that have come before the Tribunals and Courts relating to employment law issues.

In some ways, the review of the cases from October 2020 to October 2021 is a snapshot of the year before. This is on the basis that the judgments being handed down are dealing with disputes that may have initially arisen from 2018 to the start of 2020. Most recently, we have started to see some cases coming through that deal with particular elements of the pandemic such as the furlough scheme. The novel nature of such a scheme has meant that the Tribunal has had to deal with new principles and new concepts albeit within the confines of already existing statutes.
