Legal judgments seem to be growing in length, with some reaching the scale of epic novels. For instance, the 2012 Berezovsky v Abramovich case, one of the longest UK Supreme Court judgments in recent history, spanned nearly 500 pages. The rumour of the High Judge needing an oxygen tent after delivering the judgment may be an exaggeration, but it underscores the enormity of the task. While barristers are well-compensated for their efforts in dissecting such judgments, what about the rest of us who need to comprehend and explain these rulings?

At first glance, it might seem that ChatGPT, trained only on data up until the end of 2021, wouldn't be of much help with recent judgments. However, there's a workaround for users of ChatGPT Premium (currently priced at $20/month). Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Install the AI PDF plug-in from the ChatGPT Plug-ins section.
  2. Find the judgment you wish to summarize online and copy the PDF link.
  3. Paste the link into ChatGPT and request a summary of the judgment.

Consider the recent and controversial US Supreme Court case, Students for Fair Admissions v Harvard and North Carolina University. This case, which ruled the positive discrimination measures favouring certain ethnic groups at two universities unconstitutional, is a mere 197 pages long. It's an excellent conversation starter at dinner parties!

Here's an example of how to use ChatGPT to summarize this case:
